The Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools aims to guide the use of generative AI in Australian schools, focusing on enhancing teaching and learning while ensuring ethical practices and promoting equity and inclusion.
The guidelines, developed by the National AI in Schools Taskforce, are a collaborative effort between representatives from the Commonwealth, all jurisdictions, the school sector and national education agencies, including Educational Services Australia (ESA), the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO).
- It sets out principles and guiding statements to support educational outcomes, ethical use and accessibility of generative AI tools.
- Opportunities for using generative AI include supporting teaching and learning and reducing administrative workload, while recognising the need to manage privacy, security and ethical risks.
- Developed through national collaboration, the framework aligns with existing policies and educational goals and supports best practice and evidence-based approaches to generative AI in schools.
- It comprises six guiding principles: teaching and learning, human and social wellbeing, transparency, fairness, accountability and the protection of privacy, security and safety in the use of generative AI tools.
- The framework will be reviewed to keep pace with technological developments and to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness.
